Second workshop «Internet-Russia 99» took place in Dubna on September 21-24. The workshop was organized by famous russian companies «Demos-Internet» and «Contact Co.» More than 40 companies took part in the workshop. Such foreign companies as «MCIWorldCom», «Hewlett Packard», «Newbridge», «Sonera Rus», «Telia», «EUTELSAT», «Novell» and such largest russian companies working on the market of Internet service in Moscow as «Zenon N. S. P.», «Sovam Teleport», «Rospak», «Russian telecommunication network» (Rusnet), «Telecom center», «Stack Co.», regional internet providers «Tver Electrosvjaz», «Sochielectrosvjaz», «Demos-Saratov», «Demos-Peterburg», «Yamal-Inform», russian communication operators «Rascom», «Space Link» and other famous russian and foreign companies also participated in the workshop.

The workshop was organized to discuss prospects of development of Internet technologies and services. Trends of development of the Internet market, integration of communication and Internet channel services, instruments of russian Internet and many other questions.

Kutukov V. A., director general of «Demos-Internet», opened the workshop. His report was devoted to the analysis of the state of the Internet-Russia network and russian section of Internet on the eve of the 3rd millenium. He analyzed major projects of building russian section of the network and its informational filling.

Representatives of «Hewlett Packard», «Novell», «Newbridge», the large manufactor and software companies, reported about tendencies of operation of companies, related to the development of IP-technologies, and they also represented to the participants of the workshop products of their companies.

Such large communication operators as «Sonera», finnish telecommunication company, «Telia», communication operator in Sweden, EUTELSAT, international space communication operator, reported about the plans of their companies on development of their channel structure, about problems and their vision of relationship with large networks and communication operators, about their plans on the russian market of Internet and communication services.

Other days of the workshop were devoted to the discussions of the following questions: work of companies that provide Internet, newest program and hardwire solutions in providing Internet services, cooperation of Internet providers with PSTN operators, channel operators, state and supervisory bodies, problems of working licensing and sertification of equipment and program products.

Group of reports was devoted to the first results of projects, that were announced on the first workshop «Internet-Russia 98». These are development and new opportunities of IP-Spacelink project, experience in the use of Netstar project and ATM technology.

The last day of the workshop was devoted to the discussion of development of the services and informational implementation of the russian section of Internet network. Cooperation with traditional massmedia, development of international servers banner advertising and new informational services were discussed.

Resume

The workshop showed that despite of economical situation Russian Internet develops and exaggerates its audience.

Development of the russian section of Internet goes in the direction of quality upgrading and extending of the services. The important thing is price fall of the services that makes Internet more available for russian users.

Growing interests of the foreign communication operators to the russian Internet market, that was noticed on the workshop in 1998, was signified in realization of particular projects such as Sonera IVAN and in confirmation of the largest foreign telecommunication companies on the russian market.

Workshop traditionally took place in the International Conference Hall of the JINR, where computers with Internet access via 2 Mbite channel and IP phones to Moscow were installed.

All of the participants marked friendly atmosphere of the workshop and usefulness of discussions.

Initiators of the workshop «Demos-Internet» and «Contact Co.» thank all the participant for their contributions in the workshop and invite all of them and other concerned companies to participate in the next workshop that will be held in September 2000.
